Britannia Fish Bar, located at 7 Joyce Dawson Way in London SE28, stands out as a quintessential fish and chips takeaway that truly honors the traditional British chippy experience. This local gem specializes in perfectly battered haddock, cod, crispy battered sausage, and generous portions of hand-cut chips, served in nostalgic packaging designed to evoke memories of classic fish and chip shops. The care taken in presentation already sets expectations for a comforting, hearty meal.
Regular patrons appreciate Britannia Fish Bar’s commitment to freshness and authenticity. As Kim-Thùy Huynh notes, the portions are generous with haddocks that boast a golden, light batter – not too oily or heavy – that crisps delightfully with every bite, though some have found the chips a touch soft. The owner’s attention to detail extends to accommodating special requests, such as Lee-anne Griffin’s cherished ‘scraps’—the tasty fried batter pieces that add an extra layer of nostalgia and crunch. These personal touches speak volumes about the passion behind the counter and the connection to customers’ fond memories.
The takeaway experience is designed for convenience without compromising quality. L T shared how even when ordered for delivery, the cod and chips arrived warm with crisp textures that held up well despite the journey home. This demonstrates the kitchen’s skill in preparing items that maintain their flavors and crunch beyond the immediate serving time, an often challenging feat for takeaway meals.
Honesty and transparency form a key pillar of Britannia Fish Bar’s reputation. For example, when asked about halal suitability, the staff were upfront about the cross-contact issues with frying oils and offered clear explanations, earning genuine respect from customers like zakkaria sayed for their openness and integrity.
While traditionalists from the north of England might miss certain staples like gravy, as mentioned by Jake Berry, the shop does offer a decent portion of mushy peas to complement their fish and chips, ensuring a well-rounded meal. The overall atmosphere—though takeaway in nature—resonates with warmth, authenticity, and a sincere dedication to delivering comfort food that both newcomers and longtime fans can enjoy.
For anyone craving a taste of classic British fish and chips, Britannia Fish Bar presents a reliable, heartfelt option. It’s a place where the batter crunches, the fish remains tender and juicy, and the chips, while sometimes soft, still deliver that satisfying potato goodness. More than just a meal, it’s an experience steeped in tradition and honesty, making it a must-visit spot for locals and visitors alike.

Second time going into Britannia Fish Bar to order fish and chips again, to take away/out to be eaten at home. First time, we ordered 2 Haddocks and 2 portions of large chips (came in a nice box covered with an old newspaper design). They were very generous portions. The Haddock batter was not too oily or heavy, chips were a little soft & undercooked. 2nd time around today (12th April), ordered 2 Haddocks and one regular portion of chips. (£19.80 in total). Regular chips came in a paper bag and Haddock put into two separate fish and chip box (simple design). This time, both fish and chips were cooked perfectly! Quick service at the fish bar. Easy to pay (cash or card). Clean floors and walls. Staff always offer to put in salt and vinegar on chips, although Staff could smile a little more to bring some cheers to the place. Overall, recommended.

Yea nice enough but they didn’t do gravy which being a northerner for a chippy to not do gravy is very strange but it’s me who’s out of town is what it is. Decent pea portion

If your thinking of ordering for delivery, this is your sign! Literally I got cod & chips and the chips were warm alongside the fish. Warmed it for about 30seconds and it still had that crisps. Good place followed instructions on what I ordered !

Lovely fresh Chips and battered sausage was crispy and meaty....I made a special request for scraps on my chips (fried batter that they do up north and I used to have at my kids home in Hull when I was 15) and they put them on which sent me right back on memory road! So thank you!

I must give this guy 10 points for honesty! I phoned the shop to enquire whether the fish n chips are suitable for a halal diet. Man not only said no its not, but he also went the extra mile to explain, even the chips won’t be suitable as they are fried in oils that are used to fry non halal chicken wings. He could have just no, or worse still, said the chicken is not halal. He was open and transparent, just like all tradespeople should be!
